The second annual Wellington Holi festival was held this weekend in Johnsonville.

Organiser Viraj Kumar says they were hoping to double last year’s turnout of 1000.

Unfortunately the turnout was not as big as hoped, with between 800 and 900 people attending.

Mr Kumar says the low turnout was due to other festivals and events on the same day, and the location.

“Last time we held the festival in the city, so I think that made a big difference.”

Organisers are planning on relocating the festival back into Wellington city next year.

They’re hoping for this to become a set annual event, and they also have other ideas in mind for more festivals and celebrations in the future.

“My main motive is to bring people together. Friendship among the people,” said Viraj.

The Holi Festival, also known as the festival of colours or the festival of sharing love, is celebrated all over the world and originated in India.

The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh.
